Reading Mobile Booklets as iPod Notes

By Victor Goh | Published: June 3rd, 2009

Great news for iPod owners! You can now download mobile booklets as iPod notes to read on your iPod. (iPod touch doesn’t support notes, but they can read the mobile booklets as a RSS feed on their RSS Feed Reader).

How can I read the mobile booklets in my iPod?

  1. Download the mobile booklet as iPod Notes Zip File to your computer.
  2. Connect your iPod to the computer.
  3. Unzip the file.
  4. Copy the folder from step 3 into the Notes folder in your iPod.
  5. Open the Notes in your iPod.

Detailed instructions on how to copy notes to your iPod is available at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2234?viewlocale=en_US.

Major Mobile Booklet Jar File Updates

By Victor Goh | Published: May 21st, 2009

Send Mobile Booklet content as a SMS

This latest mobile booklet update includes:

  • Send booklet content as a SMS/MMS
  • Auto-open to an article instead of showing the list of articles when the application starts.
  • Display content in Full screen mode
  • Font size selection for displaying content

If you have existing mobile booklets, these new features will only be available if you re-create your jar files. Update your existing mobile booklets by selecting your required features and recreate those jar files. Full screen mode and font size selection is enabled by default.

The auto-open feature works by opening an article based on the article’s position in your list of articles. For a mobile booklet with a list of seven articles, a booklet created with the ‘Display an article for each day of the week’ option, will display the 1st article on Sunday and so on until the 7th article is displayed on Saturday. When you select the ‘Display an article for each day of the month’ option, the mobile booklet will display the 1st article on the first day of the month and so on until the 30th or 31st article is displayed at the end of the month. If there are not enough articles for each day of the week or month, the list of articles will be displayed for selection. Hope this explanation is clear enough and didn’t confuse you further. :-)

The minimum mobile Java version required for mobile booklets is now MIDP 2.0 instead of MIDP 1.0. This is to support display in full screen mode and for sending SMS. Anyway, most phones released within the last 5 years (since 2004) would come with Java MIDP 2.0.

If you haven’t done so, you can sign up for an account to create mobile booklets for your mobile phone over at http://www.mobilebooklet.com/signup.

So, how does the installation of Java apps on the Sony Ericsson phone works?

The first thing is to get the jar file into your phone. So, what are the ways to get the jar file into a Sony Ericsson phone? Let me copy & paste the instructions from Sony Ericsson’s K800 User Guide.

1. Bluetooth File Transfer
If your computer supports Bluetooth wireless technology, you can install the Sony Ericsson PC Suite to synchronize, transfer files, use the phone as modem and more via Bluetooth communication. Install the Sony Ericsson PC Suite from the CD that came with the phone or download it at www.sonyericsson.com/support. The PC Suite also includes help.

2. Infrared Port Transfer
If your computer supports infrared, you can install the Sony Ericsson PC Suite to synchronize, transfer files, use the phone as modem and more via infrared. Install the Sony Ericsson PC Suite from the CD that came with the phone or download it at www.sonyericsson.com/support. The PC Suite also includes help.

3. Transferring files using the USB cable
Connect your phone to a computer, via the USB cable, to use the phone in one of the following: File transfer or Phone mode.
Drag and drop files between the phone and computer in Microsoft Windows Explorer.

Those are the instructions from the K800 User Guide.

If the jar file is sent to your phone through Bluetooth, Infra-Red or downloaded from the Internet directly, the installation process begins once the phone has received the file. For jar files that are copied over to the phone using a USB Cable connected to a PC, opening the jar file will start the installation. You just need to follow the instructions displayed during the installation process.

I hope that was that helpful.

Nokia 6120 Classic

I wonder how many Nokia phone owners have no idea how to go about installing Java games or applications onto their phones. The mobile booklets available at Mobile Booklet will be useless to folks who don’t know how to install them on their phones. I’ve been googling for tutorials on the subject of installing java apps for Nokia phones and managed to get some online tutorials. I consider these tutorials not friendly enough for non-technical folks. I’m sharing them here in hope that some of you may find them useful. I’m sure my mum would not know be able to follow their instructions. :-)

Here’s the list of tutorials on installing java applications on Nokia phones:

If you know of any helpful tutorials on the subject of java applications installation for Nokia phones, leave the link in the comments below. Thanks. :-)
